Holt Apgar painted his model for the Boston & Maine. He added the grills by Des Plaines Hobbies. He primed the model with Model Master flat engine gray, then painted the top coat with Model Master's cobalt blue, black, and white. Decals are by Micro Scale and Woodland Scenics. A flat lacquer was applied to seal it all in. The Boston & Maine traded 48 FT locomotives for 50 GP9 engines from EMD in 1957.

The custom-painted and decorated model has had the LokSound DCC sound decoder installed.

The very early production runs of these engines came in a kit version, which is what Holt Apgar bought. He improved the handrails and cab steps, which were painted orange (with some weathering). He replaced the side grills with the perforated ones still sold by Des Plaines Hobbies. He also added the road numbers to the number boards, and AF-compatible couplers.

The very early production runs of these engines were in a kit form, which is what Holt Apgar used to build his. He modified it by installing perforated engine grills from Des Plaines Hobbies, custom glazing applied to front and rear cab windows (used clear plastic inserts from under collars of newly-purchased men's shirts!). No side glazing used for better airflow, and no headlight lenses used (none were provided in kit for either of these). He painted the handrails yellow, as per the prototype, and used custom dry transfer numbers on the number boards. American Models couplers used.

This was Bill Lane's first S-scale model that he effectively substantially re-worked. All details, repaint, and decals were done by Bill.
