Crossing Depot Street, the Southern Pacific M-4 class 2-6-0 Mogul #1629 heads up a short freight into the small agriculture town of Guth. The engine was recently built from scratch by Paul Washburn. He used a drawing by Ed Gebhart in the August 1994 Model Railroader magazine for the basic dimensions, and prototype photographs from various photographers. The real locomotive was retired in May 1957, and subsequently purchased by western movies' actor, Gene Autry, and stored at his Melody Ranch Movie Studio. In 1982 it was moved to the Heritage Junction by the SCV Historical Society, where it has now been cosmetically restored.
The Great Northern plywood-sided box car started out as a Pacific Rail Shops (PRS) 1937 AAR 40' box car kit. Paul removed and replaced the sides with sheet styrene, and made new doors using styrene, but used most of detailing parts from the PRS kit such as the ladders, handrails, brake wheel, and staff. The AB brake set is from Model Railroad Resource LLC. The trucks are PRS National Type B-1 freight trucks. Paul used Micro-Mark HO-scale rivet decals #D195 for the plywood fasteners before priming the model. After painting the car, Paul used decals from K4 #K4-GN40P-64 to complete the model.
